" CHBONICLE" NOT JUBILANT. Received 31, 9.10 p.m AiOHDOX, August 31. Mr Dealrin cibled to the " Daily Chronicle" that his promise is something more thin an offer. It is an overture suggesting the possibilities of friendly negotiation. The " Chronicle" says the offer amounls to very little, while the protective wall remains so high
INTERVIEWS WITH LEADING POLITICIANS. G. H. REID'S OPINION. . Received 31st, 11.30 p.m. Sydney, August 31. Mr G. Reid, interviewed, described Mr Deakin's preference proposals as a half-hearted attempt to give a little preference, with a stronger dose of protection.' A genuine unconditional concession to the Mother Country on the part of her daughter States wu'd be quite a different matter, and one which K must commend itself to everyone as a matter of patriotism. A genuine concession would be to reduce the tariff and open the door a little wider.

Mr Watson, in an interview, as a believer in preferential trade, welcomed Mr Dcakin's instalment, so far af the propositions went. There seemed to him an indication of 1 feeling in Australia on this important question that full concessions to other portions of the Empire could only be realised when a Reciprocal Act is possible.
