FEDERAL MAIL STEAMERS.
NOT MUCH CHANCE FOR NEW ZEALAND. Melbourne, August 30. The Postmaster slates there is no chrnce of the new mail steamers going direct from Adelaide to New Zealand as desired by the New Zealand Government. The Government had received from the contractors, after the contract was signed, a guarantee that the vessels wou'd go ou to Melbourne a id Sydney, and there was good reason fo.' saying that Brisbane would alsi bj made a port of call. The Postmaster continued : " In any case, no contract for the carriage cf mails could be made with Laings withOit the sanction of the Fedora! Government."
