DRASTIC PROPOSALS. LIMITATION OF MEETINGS. PUBLICATION OF BETTING ODDS PROHIBITED. Received 30th, 10.27 l'- m - Sydney, August 30. The Gambling Bill, as it emerged from Committee after a protracted sitting, embodied a number of drastic amendments. When Mr Griffiths carried an amendment prohibiting batting at sports meetings, it was understood Mr Wade intended to movT~?o omit horse and pony races from t'.ie definite n of sports, but he did not do so. As the Bill now stands, bitting < n racecourses is rendered illegal, but it is expected this wiil be altered when it comes up for the third reading. Other amendments in the Hill are the deletion of the clause providing a penalty for bett'iig at sports meetings, fixing the number of race days on courses within 40 miles of Sydney Post Office at 24 annually; within 15 miles of Newcastle Post Office at 15 annually. Pony meetings within forty miles of Sydney are limited to 24 annually, and beyond forty miles to six annually on any course, to take effect from January Ist next. Trotting contests are excluded from the definition of a race meeting'. The terms "sports'- has been extended, including swimming carnivals. Mr Bruntneil carried an amendment preventing newspapers from publishing odds relating to racing. The Bill provides for a Board to advise the Minister with regard to race meetings.
