SCHOOL TEACHERS.

(To the Editor). Sir, —I am only a pupil teacher, so haven't very much to lose even if I do offend the powers that be. But it seems funny to me that the other Taranaki teachers haven't tried to avail themselves of the opportunity now given to discuss the "exodus of teachers," as your paper calls it. I have often heard tiiese teachers growling about their treatment here, principally because the inspector is not as lavish as other inspectors in bestowing honours in the shape ol higher grades. This means, of course, that if two teachers start together in training, one comes to Taranaki and the other goes to, say, say, Wellington, the Wellington chap, though perhaps not as good a teacher as the Taranaki slave, gets up to At years before the other fellow is even in the B grade. Ai, of course, is the highest grade. This isn't serious in itself, but you see that the Taranaki man, with his B I or C, cannot hope to compete for a ' position against the man from the other district. The result—Taranaki men—and women—are not nearly as well placed as their fellows elsewhere; another result, they are all trying their best to gt out of Taranaki. Their low grade is a barrier, but they are content to put in for lower positions than they occupy here, merely to escape from the treatment meted out to them. —I am, etc., P.T.
