Kaihau was a strong order f<;r the first event at the meeting, but failed to run up to expectations. Kaihau is owned bv Mr G. Nicholson, of Waverley, and is by Linstock from Meta.
In the Grand National Steeplechase Euruij Swimmer, Kiatere, victory, and Swimmer fell, but horses and riders escaped without any serious injury.
Pushful injured one of his legs on the Saturday prior to the meeting, and had to be scratched for all engagemnts.
1-or the National Hurdles, Kremlin started favourite with 656 against his number, Prospector being second with SSS.
Cuiragno, by winning the Grand National Hurdle Race, on top of his previous victories, has proved himself to be one of the best hurdlers of the season. He is a six vear-old brown gelding by Cuirassier from Lady Agnes.
The local representative, Waikato was greatly fancied here for the "inter Cup, but failed to run prominently. The St. Hippo gelding would have returned his supporters a good dividend had he won. Makaroff was the favourite selection on the course, but nothing appeared to have a chance with the Merriwce gelding.
The Guesser, an aged gelding bv Enchanter, displayed a bit of his old form by running second to Shrapnel m the Jumpers' Flat Race.
Buluwavo broke down badly in the Islington Handicap. D. Pine, the light-weight attached 1 ' fhe Fordell stab'e, rode Aboriginal in the Winter Cup. Jollv Roger, who won the August Handicap, is a half-brother to Jollv Friar.
he heavy state of the course at Riccarton was no doubt responsible for tho slow time recorded in most of the races.

I.ittle work is being done on the local tracks at present ,but prabably in the course of a couple of weeks they will present a livelier appearance.
A Wairarapa correspondent stales tliat there are about forty horses in work at Masterton already. R. Knox lias taken up that gyod mare Platypus again after a lengthy'spell.
Dr. Graham, a popular sportsman an extended tour. The docsor owns the hurdler Flanagan, and a fourin Wanganui, intends leaving on an vear-old gelding bv Mahaki from The Brook.
English Channel, who broke down some time ago, has returned to his owner at Waverlcv, where he will do stud duty. The colt gave great promise last season, and his enforced retirement is to be regretted.
