An infersting ceremony took phxc on Tuesday afternoon lil the road school, flic occasion being tin presentation ol fifteen New Zcal-v■.' Swimming Association certificates < the pupils who had attended I .■.- swimming and life-saving class. ; There were r- 1 " "'en! the Mayor (Mr ]\ Doekrill), 11. I. Gilbert (Chairman of School Committee), W. Newman (President), and C. Senbright (Sccrerary New Plymouth Swimming Club) G. Tisch, P. Poland, and several parents oF the pupils. In making the presentations Mr Doekrill referred to the leltir recoavd *rom the President of the New 7j-\. land Swimming Association, and to the healthy exercise and invigorating effect >£ swimming. He congratulated (lie j.ipils on their splendid performance, ind trusted other New Plymouth schools would soon follow in line.
Mr G. Tisch said ho was pleased to be present. He referred to the Education Department's capitation grant, and staled that last year the Borouq'; Council passed a resolution giving fr->i-idmission to the baths to pupils attending swimmingS and life-saving classes. fie congratulated Mrs Dowling (the head teacher) and the committee of Mie school on being the first to take idvantage of the grant and the council's liberal offer. Ho also spik" is eulogistic terms of Mr Poland, tli■ custodian of the baths.
The Mayor then presented t!-. [certificates which are of a neat an appropriate'design, and were miic 'prized by the recipients. Mr Gilbert, on behalf of (lie seho. committee, thanked the Mayor f> attending and presenting the ccrli rates. Mrs Dowling returned than in behalf of the pupils, and referr to the certificates that several of t pupils had wo.i at Stratford. T pnpils are all anxiously looking f. ward to the re-opening of the baths. The following were awarded cert cates :
First-class boys.—B. White 8803-d B. Dowling 880 yds; H. Putters 410 yds; A. Bacon 110 yds. Second-cass boys—K. Stohr 22y'
