NAVAL COURTMARTIAL.
STRANDINC OF THE MONTACU.
Received jist, 10.45 P-m. LONDON, August 21
At the Courtmartial at Portsmouth concerning the loss o£ the cruiser Montagu, exhaustive evidence was given regarding the ollicers' implicit reliance on dead reckoning, despite the fog and the ineliicicncy of signals at Lundy. The officers pleaded in reply the irregularities of the tide. Captain Adair and Navigating Lieutenant Dathan were severely re-
primanded and dismissed the ship. Lieutenant Dathan further forfeits two years" seniority.
The newspapers agree that the Montagu sentences, though severe, are just, and rqjoice that the percentage of such groundings exhibits a marked decrease when taken over a series of years, hence the principles of the safety of navigation are unimpraired.
