FOOTBALL.
OTAGO v. SOUTHLAND. PEIt PRESS ASSOCIATION'. Invercaiwill, August 15. The Otago-Southland interprovincial football nntch was played to-day in fine bright weather, the wind favoring neither side. The game ended in a draw, Spiers for Otago scoring a try, and Hamilton for the home team a penalty goal. The ground was a bit heavy, and the game was mostly a forward one, the teams being very evenly matched. The visiting team was perhaps not so strong or experitnced as it might have been, several of their front rank men being reserved for the northern tour. The game was an interesting one, and the attendance was large.
CANTERBUBY v. WAIRARAPA. Per Press Association'. Mastketon, August 15. Prospects are not promising for the Wairarapa v. Canterbury football match to-day. Eiun fell for the last two days, and the ground is in a bad state. The Canterbury team is a weak one owing to various causes. Wood, the full-back, is suffering from injuries received up north. The teams are: Wairarapa McKenzic (2), O'Leary (2), Darville, Wriglcy, Bogers, Logan, Gray, Cadwalladcr, Mason, Wickens, Spackman, Henderson, Wins. Canterbury—Boss, Fryer, Burns, Murray, Fraser, Tyne, Webb, Fitzgerald, Shannon, Egan, Graham, Evans, Pearcc, Lenauze.
TAttANANI RUGBY UNION. A meeting of the •Management Committee of the Taranaki Rugby Union was held at Stratford on Tuesday night. Present-Messrs T. Buchanan (chairman), 11. A. Wilson, A. Humphries, D. M alone, and Skogland, secretary. A. McLeod (Inglewoud) reported by the referee for misbehaviour in the lnglewood-Stratford senior match, was reprimanded. A satisfactory explanation was received from "Major" Burke (Wnimute) and his suspension was removed. Tile motion by Mr Humphries, notice of which was given at last meeting, rescinding the resolution respecting the Darkness case, was carried, anil a further resolution passed (hat Harkness be suspended during the. pleasure of the Union. The Taranaki Association Football Union applied for permission to play the "soccer" match for the Browii Shield at llnwera on September 2!lth. previous to the Taraiiaki-Southlan I match.—The Committee could not see its way to entertain the proposal, STU.YTFOIiI) KICQUKST. A deputation consisting of Mr N. J. King (Mayor of Stratford) and Messrs Anderson, Masters and Hemingway, waited on the Committee, asking that a representative match be played at Stratford, and also for the Committee's assistance in securing a loan of £■loo from the N.Z. "Rugby Union for the purposy of ' making a sports' groi nd. It was decided to play the Wnngn-nui-Taranaki match at Stratford on Thursday, 13th September, providing' the Wanganui .Union is agreeable. The match was formerly fixed for Wednesday, 13th, at Ilawcra). iln connection with the latter request the deputation were informed that it was now too late to apply to the Union, applications' having closed on 31st July. A request from (lie Stratford Club for 50 per cent of the irnte from the Star-Stratford match to be devoted towards the cost of fencing the Stratford Ground, was not granted. It was decided to postpone the Star-jSu-utford match till Thuisday week ] I ('-!><!) and plav a praeticd match, jTaranaki reps versus "Allcomers," on tlio !W I'lvmouth Racecourse TIIK ItKP TIHU. Mr Skoifland, as mannerr, tabled a report on the "reps" Southern tour. The report complimented players on. the excellent behaviour shown throughout the trip. Mr Buchanan was appointed manager of the team which leaves for Auckland on Thursday niedit. Mr Tilley (Wananmii) will be suggested to the Wellington Union as referee in the Taranahi-Wellington match.
Hie Star-Stratford match to have been played to-day was noslponed by the liugby Union in order that the rep. team might have a game together, under coaches. In view of the interest taken locally in the forward combination, there will no doubt be a large attendance at the game on the Racecourse ground this afternoon to see how I lie men acquit themselves.
