IMPASSABLE ROADS.
MID-ISLAND SETTLEKS' HABD. SHIPS. Per Press Association.
Wellington, August 9. Mr Remington, M.H.R., waited 0* , tho Hon. Mr Hall-Jones this morning* with a sheaf of grievances from settlers in liis electorate. He stated the roads round the districts where the main trunk line is boing constructed are impassable, and that he knew of three settlers who had left Rait.lu district because they could do nothing with their holdings. These settlers had not" sold their sections. He urged that service roads for the main trunk li na should be metalled before they had to carry traffic.
The Minister recognised the hardships tho settlers had to undergo, but said everything possible was being done. A number of the roads referred to would not be required shortly and they would be reasonably repaired by the Department, which, however, could not take responsibility for the damage caused by sawmill traffic. He urged settlers to be pationt. The same difficulties had to be contended with North of Auckland and in Otago.
