"GAMING" ADVERTISEMENTS.
riiii muss ASSOCIATION". Auckland, July 30. James Regan, proprietor of a weekly paper, called "Saturday Night," was summoned in the Police Court to-day for infringing the Gaming and Lotteries Act by publishing an advertisement by which persons might bo induced to secure information in relation to a contingency, such as a horse race, Defendant, who pleaded guilty, said other newspapers offended similarly, and it was "cutting it flue" to prosecute him because the advertisement was worded in slightly different manner from the others. He handed to Mr Kettle, S.M., specimens of the advertisements referred to, and the Magistrate remarked that they certainly were similar to tho one forming the subject of the case. Tho Crown Solicitor 'said all the offenders had been prosecutedDefendant suggested that the Police were persecuting him, but the Magistrate replied that such a remark was unfair. He imposed a fine of £2 with costs, remarking that he always felt a disinclination, perhaps wrongly, to impose heavy penalties in such cases, seeing that the State legalised the totalisator, and did eyerytliing to protect it against tlio.se who ran the same class of business.
