OPENING OF THE NEW CHANNEL. PEK TEESS ASSOCIATION. Nelson, July 30. An important stage in tko progress of the new harbor works at Nelson was markeil to-day, when the new channel through tko Bjtikbr Bank, which form id tlu harbor provide! by nature, w u opon'ed. The old entrance boing tortuous, with a rock bottom does not admit res-sols drawing oyer twenty feet at high water and large vessels could only enter or leave on tlood tidf. The new channel through the bank is designed to give a depth of twenty-seyen foot when completed, aud will enable vessels drawing about fifteen feet to enter or leave at any stage of the fide. This channel has been dredged to the full depth for a width of two hundred feet through the bank, but some further dredging is needed, though there is now deeper water iu the new chanuel than in the old. The channel is also to be widened, but tko Harbor Board decided to open the new channel for use, while Iho dredge received an overhaul. To-day the s.s. Kotoili, crowded with passengers, steamed out through the new chanuel, and then returned, when Mr Graham, chairman of the Board, declared the entrance open. He pointed out that already the new channel is wider than the Suez Canal, a' d said the expenditure so far had been £53,(100, includiug. nearly on the dredge and plant, leaving .£21,-12<) still available. He hoped the Union Company boats would soon be able to come and go at any stage of the tide, and said the complelion of the harbor works, railway extension aud the opening up of lands for settlement, would croato p. new era of prosperity, which they had awaited and striven for.
