DUNEDIN HOSPITAL EXTENSION.
GOVERNMENT HOSPITALS' ENDOWMENT PROPOSAL. " PEE MESS ASSOCIATION. DuNEEIN, Juh 25. The foundation stone of the new lmedical ward at Dunedin Hospital was aid to-day by His Excellency Lord Plunket, in the presence of a representative gathering. The chairman of the Hospital Trustees (Mr Peter Miller), in tho course of his remarks, said £6,700 had been collected from the people of Otago for the new ward, and with the Government subsidy and interest earned, there was now in hand £16,000. Commitments had been made to the extent of £15,250. The old hospital, he pointed out, had been originally built for the first exhibition hold in the colony, and had been always unsuitable. About £30,000 had been expended on it, and he thought it would have been better had a new building been put up at> first. The architect presented Lord Plunkot with a gold and groenstone trowel and mallet.
j The Hon. T. Y. Duncan said the late lamented Premier intended that the Government should set aside a portion of our lands for tho purpose of education and hospitals. He (Mr Duncan), would have a Hill prepared to carry that out, and it would be ready for whoever might bo Minister of Lands when Parliament met. It was not too much to say that il 2,000,000 acres were set aside for education, and 1,000,000 acres for hospitals, it would be a very good thing.
