Farquharson, the Rhodes' scliolar for I'JOiJ, was met to-day in tho T jwu Hall by a representative ga'thernj, including Lord Phuket, Professors, Members of Parliament and others, and presented witk a chequa fo.' SOO guineas, subscribed by the public. Dr. Banliam, having traced Mr Farqukarson's career, said it served to indicate the fact that University education was open, free of expense, to all who were mentally fitted to benefit by it, so that in this Colony free education from childhood to manhood was available to industrious and moderately clover individuals. Lord Plunket, the Hon. T. Y, Dunoan, and Mr J. F. Arnold M.H.R., also spoke briefly. Mr Farquharson, in his reply, acknowledged tho debt of gratitude 'he was under to teachers and professors, and especially to his mother, to whom he owed most of all. He suggested he should have a cheque for £SO, a bank draft for £IOO and his passage paid, and the remainder set aside as a reserve for future Rliodes' scholars. The Otago Football Association also presented, Mr Farquharson with a a mall gold trinkot as a token of esteem.
