WEST END SCHOOL.

SUCCESS OF SWIMMING PUPILS.

The success of the pupils of tho West End School at the recent swimming classes held at the New Plymouth swimming baths is acknowledged by Mr (}. Harris, President of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association in a letter to Mr C. E. Seabright, secretary to the New Plymouth Swimming Club. He writes: " I have, had very great pleasure in signing certificates for swimming for boys and girls ia your district, aud I have been so struck with the performance of three of the girls that I write through you io congratulate the head teacher of the school on Ihe success of his pupils, and most particularly to congratulate Elsie White, who appears to be only eleven years old and lias swum half a mile ; Flossie AY bile (1 li years and Ruby Dumbleton (15 years), who have also swum Irilf a mile. Whilst the girls have done so well, the boys' record is also exceedingly good. "I am personally and always have been a very strong advocate of long distance swimming for 50 yards or 100 yards dash, and it is accordingly gratifying to me to tiud in your district boys and girls are being encouraged to go in for long distances. I hope that in time we may tind f liar, appheaf ions are made for lldsc who can swim a mile. Please in ecpl my hearty congratulations for your club, aud also oiler them to the he nl le.ic.her of the school."

I'lie success of these pupils and the complimentary nature ot Ihe President's remarks must lie very gratifying lo jMrs Dowling, head teacher at' the West lind, who gave the instruction in swimming.
