CITY TEAM IN AUBTBALIA. LUCKY WIN AGAINST SOUTH SYDNEY. Received 18, 7.47 p.m. Stdhit, July 18. The Auckland city team played the fourth match of the tour to-day, when they *et South Sydney. Tfce local men pressed from the start. . Cann, fending off several opponents, crossed the line, but Burleigh's kick at goal failed. A long spell of dreary play followed, till the Auckland forwards came with a fine dribbling rush, Burleigh preventing what looked like a certain score.

Sydney rallied with a combined attack, and the ball went out close to Auckland's line. MeCabe came' through the subsequent scrum, and got the ball as it was returned ,from one of the Auckland backs. Basing in, he passed to Burleigh, who scored. Haw-1 ' tfaorae missed the kick at goal. The local team; continued to have the best of it, and compelled the AuckUndett to force. Smith nude several splendid runs, but could not beat the local backs. Shortly before - the end of the spell one of the local men was penalised tor an illegal tackle, and Magee kicked a goal. Hall time was called with the score

Sydney 0, Auckland 3

In the second half, Smith, from halfway, dropped for goal, the ball only falling a few yards short, Sydney forcing. The Ancklanders determinedly stormed the local twenty-fire, but the defence was excellent. The Sydney forwards were faster in breaking up the serums. Time was drawing near when the Ancklanders opened the game up, and the best play of the match was witnessed.

Young sent the ball out to Smith, who streaked as straight as a dart from half-way for the local line. When collared at the twenty-five, he passed to Gledding, who ran round behind the posts. McGee added the major points. The home team made desperate efforts, unavailing?, to retrieve their position. Rough :.hd tumble play on the Auckland line followed, a freekick to the attackers resulting, right in front of the Aucklander's goal. Mottahon's kick struck the post and time was called with Auckland 8, South Sydney 6.

CLEANING THE SPORT. ME PIESS ASSOCIATION. Pictok, July 18. At a meeting of the Marlborough Rugby Union last night, Casey, the captain of the Awatere team, was suspended for the season, and an apology was demanded from him, for leaving the field on Saturday. A spectator named Keegan was warned off the Union's grounds for life. A resolution was also passed strongly condemning the betting clement.

Our Whangamomona correspondent writes : The return match, Kotmratahi v. Whangamomona, was played at Whangamomona last Thursday, and resulted in a win for the former by six points to nil. This is Whangamomona's seromt defeat at the hands of this team. The Kotmratahi team deserved their win, as they played a much better Ramc, and completely outclassed tneir opponents in all departments. The winners deserve special mention for the way they got their back division to work. The Cleland Brothers, Tocker, and Archer, among the backs, put in some really superior work. Some of their passing rushes were Tery creditable, considering the adverse conditions under which they played, parts of the ground being almos. a quagmire, owing to the recent persistent rains, making the bail difficult to handle. In the forwards'). Davis, Renowden, and Rcvelldid \J t things. Whangamomona showed a deplorable lack of combination in their back division, but this was partly compensated for by the good dribbling work of their forwards. I will not particularise in the latter, as they all did well, It is perhaps fair to the Whangamomona backs to state that they have been unable, through lack of proper facilities, to get the necessary practice, which is absolutely essential to develop the art of combination. It is to be hoped they will be able to remedy this defect. Mr T. Connelly acted as referee. The next match will probably be Whangamomona v. Strathmore. Players kindly note and practise.
