NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The New Plymouth Borough Council met on Monday night. There were present -. His Worship the- Mayor (Mr E. Dockrill), Crs Monteath, Bellringcr, Wilson, Brooking, Collin, Hutchcn, Browne. COST OK STONK. The foreman reported that the cost of metal now going through the rruslirr was Is lid ]n-r yar l , delivered as far as Currie street, made up of Is 5d for cost oE boulders, carting 2s (id, and crushing Is. }le required 600 feet of old iron rails at the crusher site for running the trucks, the old wooden rails beinc in disrepair. The Councillors expressed themselves as being well satisfied with the cheapness of crushing and delivery. The iron rails are to he ordered. THE MOBGCE. The Auditor-General wrote asking the Town Clerk to quoto authority for contributing £125 to a morgue, the property of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. The Town Clerk read a copy of his reply, pointing out the grant was made on condition that the morgue should be a public morgue, and to save the Council the whole expense of erecting a morgue. THE OAS MAIN'S. The Town Clerk, as borough solicitor, advised the Council that it could compel the Gas Company to repair any damage done to borough streets when laying gas mains. Before the Company proceeded to break up any street, lie stated, they must serve notice #f their iutcntion upon the Council not less than 48 hours before commencing the work, in emergency jcases thij. notice might be dispensed with. It was provided that the work should be done unner the superintenI dence of an officer of the Council. Any street or pavement broken up by the Company must be re-installed at once and kept in good repair for three months after that, and until the soil ceased to subside, but not for longer than twelve months. The Company was liable to forfeit £5 for each omission or delay, and the Council could, in case of delay, execute the work aud recover the cost from (he Company. The Secretary of the Gas Company, referring to a published paragraph in the Works Committee report on this subject, wrote that the Company fully admitted responsibility in regard to reinstating streets after laying mains, and would take steps to comply strictly with the conditions.
The Foreman reported that he had arranged to repair the roads damaged by the Company in laying mains and to charge the work to the Company. Cr. Monteath said this arrangement with the foreman threw the responsibility on the Council, whereas the Act gave the Company the responsibility. Cr. Brooking moved that a copy of the Borough Solicitor's opinion be sent to the Gas Co., with a letter that in future the Council will require them to 'observe the conditions. The motion was carried.
