MIDHIRST NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mr W. Jones, who has been butchering here for many years, and is wellknown throughout this district, has sold his business to Messrs Christinson and Neilson. Mr Jones has taken up 2,000 acres at Kawhia and intends leaving here in about 3 weeks to build a new home on one of the beautiful rivers which run through his valuablo property. Mr Jones says that fish and game of all kinds are very plentiful, so there will be plenty of amusement there far him, as he is a great sport. Some timo ago a family about two miles from here were continually troubled with fevers. The doctor condemned the water they were using from a well, and ordered them to have a tank Sinco then they have not been troubled by sickness. A few days ago it _ was discovered that the well con-j tiined petroleum, and this evidently was the cause of the trouble.

Mr Klccman, the maDager of the butter factory, is making great preparations for next season by concreting the floors of several of the creameries, bricking-in and re-setting the boilers etc. The two 15 h.p. turbines that were recently put in at the butter factory are doing splendid work and the steam engine that is kept as a stand-by has never turned a whee since tho new turbines wore finidied thus saving hundreds of pounds in fire wood. The supphors havo Mr Klccman to thank for this, as he worked hard to get it done. In addition to the turbines tho splendid freezer made by Messrs Humble and Nicholson of Geelong, is also doiiv good work and is a picture to look at " The new saddler, Mr J. Arnold, who has opened up business at the corner of the carriage factory, evidently has great faith in Midhirst. -jast l* riday he loft here in a great hurry, and on his return, it was easily seen what had happened—he had I married the " best gu'l in Ne«v Zealand."

Mr Fred Goodwin has given the P'iblie a treat by putting a new cloth on his billiard table and filling his rack with new sticks. The only thing he has to attend to now aro the lights, which allow plenty of room for improvement.
