TARANAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

At tho ordinary monthly meeting of the Tat'anaki County Council on Monlay. there were presont: Crs. G. V. Tate (chairman), Adlam, Hill. Andrews, ■lulian, Brown, and Steyeus. fouemen's iiepoh rs. Geo. Walker, Junction road foreman, reported having had 22 posts to fence in the head of a creek on Moun tain road. Stringers lying near Upland road could with advantage replace the stringers of llio bacon factory bridge, [nglewood, these rotting away off the •:ap. T A'enty yards of metal were repiired on tlio Avenue road. Now posts wero required in tho jrotective fenco at the chain bridge, and these :ould be obtained from Colesby's contract.—Adopted, and the last clause vill be acted upon.

Crs. Brown and Stevens will confer with the foreman as to Irs requirenents. The matter of repairing the bacon factory bridge was deferred, as a new bridge will have to be erected at this point, the Inglewood Borough Council sharing the oost. The Mo a forem in, C. P. Lord, reported having had a dray engaged in metalling Mountain 'and Tariki roads most of the month. Trees overhanging Tariki road had boen cut down, and contracts were proceeding satisfactorily. Messrs Simons and Jones had made a good job of putting their tramline across the Tariki road.

John Holmes, foreman of Waitara riding, reported the Matakara bridge had broken through, and was unsafe for heavy loads. Twenty 12-inch pipes: had been put in on the Mountain road. He had carted out 198 yards of metal grom Cartwright's contract, and had had a cart employed in repairing metal. The rest of the men's time had been employed in cleaning out watertables, etc. The foreman was authorised to attend to a muddy place opposite the Fitzroy butchery. The Chairman said he had arranged with Cartwright for another 150 yards of metal from Sampson's pit at his previous contract price.—Confirmed.

The matter of hiring out the Council's trucks to Mr Johnson, of the Urenui brickyards, was left to the chairman, with power to act. E. Bennett, Junction road east, reported haying raked in metal and blinded portions of Horrocks' Hill, The Zig-Zag had beon fenced. Further fencing and some widening were necessary, but he would leave this till a more favorable season. The road from the bottom of the Slippery Hill as far as Tiiriki was breaking up, and should be metalled. There was stone on hand.— Report referred to Crs. Brown and Stevens to confer with the foreman.

E. Moore, foreman Omata riding south, reported hiving attended to road-repairing during tho month. A new whoel-barrow was required. The foreman will be asked to attend to cutting off storm water opposite Mr Jack Putt's, Okato. The Omata foreman, Wm. Evetts, reported having used 112 yards of old metal from Tapuae Hill in repairing. The road between Crompton's and Allen's Hill would be attended to when Bayly and Sole delivered necessary metal. Side-tables from Oakum factory to Tapnae had been cleaned out. The Tapuae bridges on Plymouth and Hurford roads should be overhauled with a view to repairing or re-building. He did not think those bridges would hold out, as ho had expected, until timber was available from tho Mountain road (Tapuae) bridge. The foro man considered that 500 yards of soil at Cd a yard would ho required to comply with Mr Honeyfield's request to (ill in hole on his frontage. A culvert would need to be lengthened, too. Mr Honcyfield should do his filling first, but must not bo allowed to take soil from the road near his section, as all that would be required for the Council's work

Tho report was ahoptcd, and recommendations approved in connection with Honeyfield's filling.

ELTJIAM ROAD RATES. The clerk said seyeral Eltham road special loan ratepayers had asked for time in which to pay their rates. Cr. Brown could not see why they " should not be made to dub up " the same as the rest. Cr Adlam said the Council was paying interest at the bank because this money was not paid. On the motion of Crs Adlam and Stevens, it was decided that both instalments must be paid by tho Ist of September.

DOO-TAX COLLKCTI9N. Henry Warren, dog-tax collector in the Moa riding, asked for the return of his deposit, as he had completed his contract. All dog-tax defaulters will be sued, and the collectors informed that when they have appeared in Court, in terms of their contract, their deposits will be returned.

BRIDOK DEPORT The bridge carpenter reported having placed a new wing on the up-river side of Marshall's bridge, Lepperton, and eight new decking planks and two new joists at the end. The Sentry Hill bridge, near the mill, had been altered to give a roadway of Bft 6m. clear, and 9ft between trusses. The Chairman commented on the fact that bridges built of local timber had a short life of only about ten years.

THE CRUSHES, The engine-driver, T. Urry, reported that he had shifted the engine and plant from Houui to Oakura and thence to the Waiwakaiho depot in dune. The crusher broke through the decking of the Waiwakaiho bridge, and the engine was with difficulty takon across the ford. A new driving belt I was required. Tho purchase of the belting was authorised. TIIE TAPPAB CONTRACT. Mr B. Harford, contractor at the Tapuae, asked lor extension of time i also for £275 assistance towards his loss by washouts.—Referred to llio Chairman to doal with. ROAD HOARD GHAJfTS. The Frankley aud Eliotßoad Boards applied for their share of the £2OO subsidy granted at last meeting of the Council.—Granted. CUtKTNGTON ROAD. The Department of Roads wrote that the matter of making provision for extension of Carrington Road would receive consideration in the compilation of this year's Estimates.

ACCIDENT INStnUJfCE. The South British Accident Insurance branch (NW Plymouth) quoted lor accident insurance —The various companies will be asked to quote prices. TrrE Ct.EItHMT, STAFF, Mr Ellis, the County Clerk, wrote that he needed a mire experienced assistant. TIIO present girl was a good assistant, but could not tako any responsibility, of course. The County work liad been exceptionally heavy, in", eluding the collection of special rates, some of which hal not been collected for 17 years. Special loan works were going on, and t.'iis, with current work, had kept him busy, and compelled a largo amount of overtime. He proposed engaging a more experienced assistant at about 22s 6d a week, and asked the Council to contribute 12s (id towards the salary. C'r Brown admitted that there had been a tremendous amount of extra work. There was only £2OO of rates outstanding, a state of affairs that bad not existed for many years past, lie moved that the application be granted for a period of twelve months. Seconded by Cr ll>'ll, and carried nem, eon. Mr Ellis thanked the Council for their kind consideration. SUPI'KRV KILL, Messrs Orbell and Mackay reported that Messrs Pikett and Wilkie had' completed the Slippery Hill contract, I and Mr Souter was getting on well with the fencing.
