, «« A RTTNNING MATCH. pee pbess ASSOCIATION. Napibb, June 4. A running match over 100 yds,,, 130 yds., and 150 yds., between L. 0. McLachlan, of New Zealand, and B, Hourigan, of New South Wales, took place on the Recreation Ground this afternoon for a stake of £SO aside. McLaohlan was slightly the favourito, though Hourigan was the most fancied for the first distance, 100 yds. The ground was somewhat heavy and holding, and under the oiroumstanoes the times recorded were very fast. In the first distance both men got away together, but MoLaohlan got more quickly into his stride, and soon had a lead of half-a-yard, whiob. Hourigan reduced to about six inches at the half distance. McLaohlan, however, drew away again in the last twenty yards and won by nearly two feet in the good time of lOsecs. The second distance was a repetition of the first, McLaohlan leading by a foot for the first twenty yards, when I Hourigan drew level, but McLachlan had him beaten when 75 yards had been traversed, and finishing with a great burst of speed, won by two yards in 13sec. The third distance was not run. BICYCLE ROAD RACE. PBS PBESS ASSOCIATION. Palmeeston N„ June 4. The annual Clarkson Bicycle roac race of £SO over a distance of ft miles, was run to-day. There Wer thirty-seven starters from all part of the colony. The winner was A. I Standei (Carterton); A, Greenles (Aramoho) was second, John bcobi (Longburn) third, A. Doriald (Pa! mcrston N.) fourth. The winner ha 45 minutes start and took 5 hours 1 minutes to complete the journey, pal cf whioh was over a Btretch of sand.
