N.Z. CHESS ASSOCIATION.

PBB PBBBB ASSOCIATION. Wellington, May 24 At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Chess Association, the report concluded with a referenco to tho next championship congress, which has been allotted to Christchurch, and will be held during the currency of the Exhibition, play commencing on Boxing Day. By increasing tho usual prizes, it is hoped to seoure competitors from beyond the Colony, thus making this competition the most important yet held in New Zealand. It was suggested that a shilling subscription be invited from chess players throughout tho Colony, and that all social Amotions be dispensed with- at the Congress, tho whole of the cash available beina: used for prize funds. This was unanimously agreed to, and the question of prize money was commented on, and it was suggested by Mr James (Wellington) that in those days where finishes were invariably very closo, there should col bo a difference of £lO between two loading prizes. Tho prize list should bo graduated so as to accord with performances, This principle was now being recognised iu Europe and ho would suggest that a difference of £\ bo mado in the prizes where only half a point separated the loading players, £2 10s for a difference of ono point £i 10s for a difference of ono and half points, £7 for a difference of two points, and so on in a sort of arithmetical progression. It was decided to ask Mr James to submit elaborate details of his schemo for consideration at the June quarterly meeting.

The election of officers resnlted a s follows : President, Mr Justice Denniston (re-elected), North Island, upper division: J. M. Lennox and C. Little (both of Auckland) j lower division, C. W. Benbow and Hon. J. Rigg (both of Wellington) ; South Island, upper division: Rev. Black (Chnstchurch) and Gordon P. Wood (Timaru); lower division, Ven. Archdeacon Gould (Oamaru) and J.
