UNVEILING THE CAMPBELL STATUE.
PBB PRESS ABBOCIATION. Auckland, May 24. A great crowd assembled at Cornwall Park to-day to witness the unveiling by His Excellency the Governor, of the statue to Sir John Logan Campboll, tbo father of Auckland, who gave Cornwall Park to the people of New Zealand. The statue has a total elevation of 86 feet, and stands upon a rooky base 17 foet high, the statue itself measuring 9ft 6in. The Governor, amid prolonged cheering, unveiled the statue, and referred in eulogistic terms to the great generosity of Sir John Campbell.
Sir John on rising to Bpeak, was received with the greatest enthusiasm. He said Cornwall Park was an historical ground, and would be handed down to posterity as a lasting memorial of the great aboriginal people whose oountry we now oooupy. He Would like to see on the summit of One Tree Hill an obelisk in' memory of the great Maori raoe. Proceedings were concluded by a speech from the Mayor, I Mr A. M. Myers.
