WHANGAMOMONA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Reads.—The difficult work of proTiding roads for this very difficult district proceeds apace. At present there are four or five drays at work on one road, carting burnt papa. This will benefit tho whole community, and is a very necessary piece of work. The children, especially, will participate in the benefit, and it will enable them to attend school more regularly. When the road is completed from Whangainomona to Kohuratahi, il is safe to say there will not be a better one in the district, thanks to the once-des-pised papa. Trade —The local buttor factory has closed Tor the winter. I have not bcop supplied with particulars as to whether the soason just olosod has been successful. However, we sincerely hope it has. Wo also hope that thoso ongaged in this, ono of our natural resources, will enjoy their wellearned rest j thoy deserve it.
Scholastic.—No doubt you havo already boon informed of the election of the following gentlemen to the School Committee for the ensuing year, viz.: Messrs Gleoson, Dougherty, Jennings, Davis, and Izett (chairman). I notice that thero is a distinct lick of interest manifested in scholastic matters, not only here, but the complaint seoms to bo pretty general throughout tho district. Some years ago householders crowded the school to elect a committee. Now it is difficult to form one at nil. Can it be the parents and guardians are losing interest in the cducation of their children r 1 Mr Tail, the Victorian Director of Education, when over here somo months ago, praised our system of election of local school committees, ns it tended to maintain local and parental interest in the school. Can it be that this interest is waning ?
Sports, etc.—A chess and draughts club is to be formed here shortly, with plenty of talent available. The long-talkcd-of bachelors' ball is to eventuate at Kohuratahi Hall on the Bth prox, Mr C. Joyce is acting secretary, and there is every prospect of it being n complete success. I understand that n concert and danco is to come off on the Ist prox. Football has not cauglit on as anticipated, but probably further efforts will be made and attended with success.
