EDUCATION BOARD.

Tlic ordinary monthly mooting of the Taranaki Education Board was held on Tuesday evening. Present: Messrs J. Wade (chairman), Faull, McDonald, Maunder, Moukhouse, Morton and Trimble.

The trees at the back of the house should be cut down, as tliey were injuring the building and preventing tho light and sun from getting into tho back rooms and filliug the spouts with pines. Other repairs were recommended, the total running into an estimated cost of £4l. Plans had been prepared for latrines at Inglewood. Tho report was received. The Chief Inspector reported that he could not recommend the formation of a District High School at Opunake, owing ,to dearth of pupils, but had arranged that if the pupils remained at the school during the day and took evening classes at night their needs : would be met for tho time being.—The report was adoptod. Tho Chief Inspector reported that the matter of physical training in schools was'of greatest importance, and he would endeavor to arrange teachers' | elasses aftor the midwinter holidays, if Miss Cameron's terms meet the Board's | approval.—Adopted. t The chairman reported that he could not recommend an application [ to the Department for a grant to enlargo the Eahotu school, but should the average be maintained for some time thcro would be a good case. The Finance Committee recommended that the Architect inspect the the teachers' residence at Egmont Village, with a view to repairs, and the Architect attend to the necessary repairs and renewals effected; tli it the Board supply wire and staples for the Board's portion of a fence round the school grounds, the committee to find the labor required; that the Department having replied to the Board's application for a new residence at Opunake to the effect that they are willing to contribute one third of the cost of a neff six-roomed residence provided such cost is reasonable, they be again applied to and informed that if they will contribute :i2OO, the Board will erect a new building; that the matter of repairs to the chimney at the Durham road resideuce be referred to the chairman; that tlio inspector enquire into the request of the Lincoln road committee for more desks; that at Bell Block the following works be done:—Painting four rooms and passage, new tank, repairs to school, painting porohes, filling ap well, and that the attention of tho committee bo drawn to the necessity for cleaning the gutters and spouting ana for cutting down the pino trees near the residence; that tho West .d. Committee be granted permission to have the school lightel by gas, and that with regard to their application for the teacher's room the matter be held over for the present: that tho tondor of Messrs Irvine and Henry be acceptod for additions to Salisbury road residence and that ef Messrs Boon Bros for additions to the Oaonui School.

The report was adopted. The Reserves Committee recommended I hat tho Turoto School reserve be leased to Mr C. H. Hope, and that Mr Eduard Mason be roferred to the School Commissioners in respect to his application to lease of a section on the corner of the Est and Flint roads, near Stratford.—'Adopted.
