PETROLEUM.
The importance to tho colony at large of tho successful issuo of boring operations, after many years of disappointmont and delay, is at presont hardly calculable, says the " Waimate Witness." If the Standard Trust can be kept out—oven at tho expense of legislation specially aimed at them—tho discovery will bo of groat value. The oil fields will give employment to a large number of men, and may in that way becoms prejudicial to the dairy industry by robbing the latter of its labor supply; the cheapening of kerosene will benefit the community at large; the utilisation of the bye produets will mean the establishment of new industries. Taken all in all, this is one of the most important mineral finds ever made in New Zealand. With the extension of oilfields, and the probable inauguration of the iron industry, the prospects for New Plymonth look exceedingly rosy, and within twenty years that town should advance by leaps and bounds. Suburban land should be property well worth acquiring, also corner lots in town. As the advancement and prosperity of the surrounding districts will be assisted, and as every one likes to see persistent efforts rewarded, I feel confident that all my readers will join with me in rejoicing over the fact that New Plymouth has " Struck Oil."
