DURHAM ROAD NOTES.
(From Our Correspondent.)
The country around here is now assuming a wintry appearance, and the stacks of winter hay will soon have to be cut into. On tho whole, there is a very fair supply of feed for the colder months, although in one or two, instances tho turnip crops have been failures, owiug to the ravages of flies. One instance of the depredation of these insects which was brought under the writer's notice was that of a sixacro patch of turnips that had claimed the attention of the flies. Out of the whole amount of seed put in, npt a solitary one was loft to provide the cows' winter feed.
As is usual in other parts of the country, there are few potatoos left for winter consumption. Not only have the tubers suffered through the blight, but on somo farms the cauliflowers and broccoli have become affected.
Tho local factory is now running but three days a week. Somo of the suppliers aro beginning to fall off altogether. The supplies to the factory have now been reduced to about 8001bs, producing a dozen boxes every other day, There is some talk of making cheese at the Makctawa factory next season, although nothing definite has yet been decided. The Maketawa footballers tried conclusions with the Bristol road team on Saturday, and won by three points to nil. With the drying off of the cows, firewood chopping is becoming an industry into which all the spare time is being put.
