ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
WOMAN BEPOfIB THE COUBT.I A PECULIAR CASE. m PIMB ASSOCIATION. Auciland, May 17. Etta Utting, the young married woman who attempted to commit suicide by swallowing a dozen doses ot toothache cure, came before Mr BidI doll, S.M., this afternoon for sentence.
A young man deposed that aocused, when recovering from the effects of the poison, was asked why she took it and replied, " Becauso I love you." This was indignantly denied by the woman, who behaved in such an excited state in Court that the Magistrate remanded her for medical examination as to the state of her mind.
She was roported by the prison surgeon to be quite sane. Her husband, a young man, told His Worship thai tlioy had been married two years and seven months, and his wife left him seven weeks ago. He wished her to return and would make arrangements to provide her with a homo. Mrs Utting said she would return if her husband's treatment would improve, and Mr Utting replied that no wife had been better treated. The Magistrate reminded accused that she was charged with a serious offence, for which she could be imprisoned. However, he did not want to send her to gaol, and, as she promised to return to her hnsband, she wonld be convieted and ordered to rome up for sentenoe if called upon. If she behaved she would never be called upon, and he hoped she saw the foolishness of her action.
