DEAF JURYMAN'S JOKE.

A PECULIAR OCCURRENCE. FSB PBESS ASSOCIATION. Chbistchubch, May 9. At the Supreme Court to-day, a young man named Daniel Gunn was charged with having unlawful knowledge ef a girl between 12 and 16 years of age. The jury returned after an hour's retirement and it was announced that one of the jurors was stone deaf, aud had not heard a word of the evidence.

,His said it was a ' most peculiar occurrence and the first of its kind that had happened in New Zoaland to the best of his knowledge, although thero had been similar cases in England. Had the man's deafness been discovered before the jury retired, he could have directed, with the consent of both sides, that the oase be tried by the eleven jurors. The jury having retired, however, that oourse could not be taken. He was sorry, but the only course open was to discharge the jury without a verdiot. There was no alternative. The jury wore accordingly discharged. The case against the accused was then adjourned till Monday next.
