TARANAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

A special mcetinc; of the Taranaki I County Council was held on Monday 'morning. Present: Mr Tate (chairman), Grs. Stevens, Brown, Julian, Andrews, Hill, and Adlam. The balance-shea for the halt-vear ended September 30th, 11)05, was eonsidered, and it was resolved that its adoption be held over until next meeting, to enable tho clerk to communicate with the Auditor-General with regard to the exception taken to the hospital | and charitable aid contribution,

ORDINARY MEETING.

The same members were present. Cr. Adlam reported that, iu company with Cr. Julian, he had inspected the entrance to Mr Morris' property, Oinata riding, and could not recommend the Council to make the approach. It was agreed to charge Mr Kyngdon Is 9d per yard for crushing stone, if paid by the cud of the present munth ; otherwise the charge would be 2s per yard. iouesien's befoet. Moa Riding.—C. P. Lord, foreman, reported that twenty yards of gravel have been put in front of Tariki Hotel; persons with trees overhanging the road have been notified to cut. them back; Simons Bros, have finished their drain-clearing contract; Wellharn lias practically finished his stone-breaking contract j pipes for Tariki road have been ordered, but have not yet arrived. The foreman also reported the bridge near Norfolk road was in a very shaky condition, and advised that the structure be braced.

Cr. Stevens stated that ho had inspected the bridge near Norfolk road, and found a cap broken and other defects. If the structure were braced underneath, it would last until a new o,ie were placed there.—Resolved that the foreman be empowered to brace the bridge.

G. Walker, foreman, reported on the Junction road, stating, tliat Sole ancl Bayly had completed contract No. 12. The foreman put a wooden culvert in rear Mr Drodrovski's property, at a cost of about £'l. The Junction road was now in good order, and there wcio 50 or 60 yards of metal on hand to be put on Mountain road during the present month. H was further reported that J. W. West was carrying passengers in 'buses on tho Junction road without a license. Mr Walter also complained that some people were iu the habit of throwing blackberry and gorse plants on to the water-tables, and that small culverts had been put in' without authority.

It was resolved that a demand be made to J. W. West for a license fee. E. Bennett, foreman for Junction Road East, reported on the work at Horroclc's hill, showing that the contractor had delivered 135 yds of metal, making 200 yds, since starting sameIt was also reported that the road hud been cut up badly from Horrocks to Slippery Hill, and that it would require 100 yds of metal to keep the road in repair through the winter. A complaint was made that J. Tarry's traction engine hud been used on the road without a license.

It was resolved that tenders be invited for 100 yds of boulder stone to be delivered on Junction road between Horrock's Hill and Slippery Hill; also that the foreman be granted 10yds metal to repair Durham road, and that, he be empowered to fix up water tables at the same time. Aiso that pipes be supplied to the foreman as requested and that he be written to enquiring as to whether the engirc complained of was engaged in agricultural or oilier « ork.

Waitara Riding.—J. Holmes, foremail, .ported that Richmond road had been graded during the month ; Mr Cartwright has completed contract 2-t, taking 208 yards to join up to the old metal. The same contractor had u..io completed the contract commenced last year.

Ouiata Riding. William Evett, foreman, reported that the road was, with slight exception, ia fair order, lie had been engaged for a fortnight at Tapuac. gravelling from the beach. Mr Ducker, proprietor of Warea saw-mills, was putting over-weight loads on the bridge over the Stony rivor, Bridges were in fair order, but needed repair. The road from Puniho road to Oakura dairy was in fair repair, except iu places, where a continuation of the work would be necessary. Urry, reported that for the mouth of April the crusher worked 7i days, crushing 516 yds. The crusher had been shifted front Mangorei on sth inst,, and from Kyngdon's depot to Mr Riddlo'is property at the Heimi on 21th. On 20th inst. he had started with Foreman Walker, blinding new metal on Junction road, and cleaning out water tables. DEI'UT.ITION. Mr Bayly waited on the Board re his contract at Tapuac, stating that nothing further could be done during the winter with the work, and request- . ing that his contract be cancelled After discussion it was decided to grant the request.

repairs to the bridge on Richmond road, stating that complaints had been made to him by settlers that the bridge had been made too narrow by the contractor who had executed the work. —Tho Chairman explained that the contractor had staled to him (that the bridge was as wide as previously. It was resolved that the matter of producing stone between Piiniho and Stony river be left to Cr Andrew to arrange.

The Chairman reported having arranged with Mr B. llorford to have the munetalled portions of the Tapuae Hill formed with shingle from the beach.

It was resolved to call tenders for 100 yds of boulders for the Omata Riding, to be delivered between Allan's hill and Waireka, tenders to close Saturday, 12th May. It was resolved that J. Sutherland's tender for works on Slippery hill be accepted. Rosolved, that Mr Corbelt be authorised to conduct work at Stony river for County Council under the supervision of tho Couuty Engineer and Mr Murray, Government Engineer. Resolved, that a vote of thanks be accorded Mr E. M'. Smith, M.H.R., for his services in connection with obtaining grants of money for work at Stcny lliver.

Final payment on contract for Tapuae bridge was authorised to be paid to contractor. Resolved, tliat no tender be accepted for contract for bridge ovor Piataiu stream on Mountain road and that the engineer be asked to design new bridge of one arch, of not more than 25 to 30ft span and Mft width of roadway. I Messrs Jones and Carson's tender at 3s per yard for breaking 250 yards of stone on Tariki and Mountain road was accepted. Twenty pounds was granted for court costs to recover rates. It was resolved that provided the residents of Okato find necessary timber, to extend the kerbinp: aiid footpaths, the Council will undertake the work. j llesolved, that Mr Harford be granted an extension of time for completion of his Tapuae contract to Juno 30th.
