THE MEIKLE COMMISSION.
THE CONTEMPT OF COUBT INCIDENT. TEIt MESS ASSOCIATION. Dcnedin, May 3. Meikle, for contempt of Court, in threatening a witness, was severely admonished by the judges, who said at present they would iut inflict a penalty, but postpone adjudicating until the conclusion of the enquiry. They trusted Mr Meikle's conduct till then would justify the Commission in adopting a lenient course, and dismiss the matter. A DRAMATIC INCIDENT. HIS CHARACTER CHALLENGED. 1 Dunedin, May 3. The Meikle commission continued to-day. The proceedings in tho miming were important, and in the afternoon exciting, Moikle entered the witness box, and after giving evidence as to his trial, and the trial of Lambert, was cross-examined by Dr Findlay as to his character before the trial. Meikle challenged anyono to say that he had done wrong in thought, word, or deed. Dr Findley said he would accept the challenge, and then proceeded to examine Meikle minutely in regard to his conduct in a house in Invercargill. Witness stoutely denied the allegations, and said the whole thing was an attack on his character. The female in question, the owner of the house, was brought into Court, and identified witness as the man who had stayed at her house, but witness still protested his innocence, and said it was all a mistake, adding that it was another party who was implicated. Tho incident was exciting and dramatic.
