How racing at some country meetings is conducted may be gathered from tlie following paragraph which we tale from the Ashburton " Mail " : —The stewards of the Chertsey race meeting had a very busy time oil Monday considering protests in regard to the horse events. Eight from tha opening race, the horse racing was noticeable for breaches of the rule of racing, and deliberate iaterferenco of one rider with another was only to# common. In one event the riders of the two leading horses became embroiled half a mile from home, and they literally "fought" their way down the straight, arms going wildly, one horse being driven in to bore the other on to the rails, while the scene finished up with a most barefaced cross right under the judge's nose. More drastic punishment than mere disqualification for a race is needed for those who indulge in such tactics.
