PRESENTATION TO MR W. A. BURNSIDE.

Mr W. A. Burnside, who was appointed first assistant at the Central School, New Plymouth, nearly four years ago, and who has now received promotion to the headmastcrship of the Inglewood school, has made himself very popular with his pupils without at all impairing the efficiency of the instruction. Bather to the contrary, his results have been more than usually satisfactory. The girls of Standard VI. decided to show their full appreciation of his kindness and manner of •imparting instruction, so on Friday afternoon invited Mr Burnside and the whole of the teaching staff to meet them in the gymnasium. Mr Dempeey, the head teacher, acting on behalf of the girls, presented Mr Burnside with a very handsome silver egg-stand and butter-dish, making some eulogistic reference to the recipient's record in doing his duty to the children under him and to the high esteem in which he was hold by his fellow-teachers in the school. Mr Burnside briefly returned thanks, voicing his regret at leaving the school, his appreciation of the handsome present, and his good wisheß towards the pupils and teachers at the Central. The teaohers, with Mr ] Taylor, gymnastic instructor, were then entertained at afternoon tea, provided by the girls of the Bixth standard. Mr Dempsey, for the teachers, thanked the ■ pupils for their entertainment, which 1 was much appreciated, especially as ■ the edibles had been prepared by the 1 girls themselves. The company pro--1 nounced them " Jolly Good Fellows," ' and gave them three cheers, which were f followed by three? for the teachers and 1 three for Mr Taylor, by the girls.
