GALES ON AUSTRALIAN COAST.
SHIPPING INTERFERED WITH VESSELS IN COLLISION. WIDESPREAD DESTRUCTION ON LAND. Received 27,10.30 p.m. | Sydney, April 27. A strong westerly gale has been raging all day, but has now eased. Rough seas have been running. Shipping is sheltering. The storm was specially severe along the south coast. At BelJambi, a number of hoases collapsed, and many others were damaged. The roof of a shed lifted bodily and crushed a woman named .Fleming to death. Woonona, Bulli, Clifton and other townships in the district report widespreadjdestruction. Coaling operations at tho jetties were stopped by the rough sea. Melboubnb, April 27 The steamer Aramac from Sydney with sixty passengers, collided with the French barque Nantes anchored off Cape Sound, where the barque was sheltering f*om the heayy gale. Both were considerably damaged, though ißSufficient to endanger their safety. The Aramac came on to Melbourne. Received 28,1.6 a.m. Melboubnb, April 27.
The Aramac had a plate stovo in aud also sustained considerable damage to her inner fittings. The weather was thick at the time. The passengers were unaware of the collision till the morning. 3EALANDIA IN THE STORM. Received 28,1.6 a.m. Sidney, April 27. The Zealandia has arrived. She encountered strong westerly gales and high seas.
