WELLINGTON R.C. MEETING. FIRST DAY BESULTS. FEB PEESS ASSOCIATION. Wsilikoton, April 20, The Wellington Eacing Club's Autumn Meeting commenced to-day. The weather, which promised fine at the start, changed in the course of the afternoon, and a light drizzling rain set in. When the North Island Challcngo Stakes eame up for decision the turf was somewhat on the heavy side and against fast racing. There was a good attendance, and speculation was brisk; the sum of £12,469, in-' clading £1584 on the doublo machine, being put through the machine, as against £6537 for the corresponding diy of last year. The double machine paid out on the winning combinationMystification (Thompson Handicap) and Glenowlct (Railway Handicap)— £67 16s. Isolt's withdrawal from the Challenge Stakes robbed the race of a good deal of interest. Acuilles was never seriously troubled, though Exnisor and Clunchattan ran well. Mystification's victory in the Thompson Handicap was unexpected. Mr Hunter's representative never loft the issue in donbt after covering half the distance. Results : First Hurdle Handicap: Waitarere 1, Hydrant 2, Defoe 3. AH started. Won easily by two lengths. Time, 3.20 2-5. Divs., £3 2s and £l2s. Waiwetu Handicap: St. Albert 1, Czarevna 2, Marguerite 3. Also started: Maui and Polycaste. St. Albert cut down the leaders two furlongs from home and won comfortably by two lengths. Time, 1.29 3-5. Div., £5 4s. Silverstream Hack Handicap: Destruction 1, Cavatina 2, Eiflcmaid 3. Other starters: JEolus, Wailcthe, Merriwai, and Mocassin. Won by three-quarters of a length. Time, 1.31 3-5. Divs., £3 9s and £1 19s. ■ Thompson Handicap: Mystification 1, Apa 2, Polyanthus 3. Also started : Signalman, Gold Crown, King Billv, Solution, Starshoot, Delawere, Mobility, Jolly Friar, Aberration. Mystification, who was prominent at an early stage of the race, came away at the half-way distance and easily secured the honours by two lengths, a length separated the other placed horses J Time, 1.42 4-5.
