TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.

At the regular monthly meeting of the Taramiia Education Board there were present: Mr J. Wade, (chairman), Mrs Dougherty, Messrs Morton, Faull, Trimble, Monkhouse, McDonald, and Adlam. The architect was instructed to prepare plans, and call tenders for new latrines at the Inglewood school, to be connected with tho Borough sowars, and tho Inspector was authorised to attend to the matter of blinds required for that school. TEACHERS' MATTEItS. The Huirangi teacher asked that the school have mid-winter holidays from 2nd June instead of at usual time.— Granted. Member l ; oomplained of tho habit touchers had of neglecting to write on these and similar matters to their committees.

On tho motion of Messrs Monkhouse and Morton, it -was docidod to recommend tho executive to appoint two pupil teachers, instead of one assistant in cases where such appointment is possiblo and satisfactory. In accordance with tho Chief Inspector's recommendation tho appoinLment of the following probationers were confinned:—Miss Gladys Roynell (Fitzl'ov), Miss Edith Lewis (Ngaire), and Miss Jessie Cameron (Central). The Tikorangi school committee protested against the delay in appointing an assistant teacher, as the attendance had averaged 43 during the past three, quarters. It was unfair to have the school understaffed till January, 1907, as stated by the Board. It was decided to appoint an assistant.

The Board decided it could not entertain Mr Grant's request for a refund on the room he erected on taking over the Inglewood residence. The following resignations were accepted : Miss Barry, pupil teacher at the Central school; Mr L. Bicheno. Huiakama; Miss Mackenzie, Fitzroy.

On the motion of Mr Monkhouse, seconded by Mrs Dougherty, it was decided that the various Education Boards be approved with a view to their co-operation tp obtain security against the absorption of those pupils sent from their district to the Normal Training College by the Education Board iu whose district the College is situated. A week's leave of absence was granted to Mrs Wilson, ltatapiko, on account of illness.

Further application will be made to the Department for Miss Grant's payment as pupil teacher at Inglewood. (SCMOLABSIIIF.)

The matter of allocating the scholarship money available by Alfred Grant foregoing his senior scholarship was left in the hands of the chairman. The chairman of the Oamui school committee wrote that there were eloven children on the Kina road of school age, whom Mr Henderson would carry to school at the rate fixed by the Department. There were also six children of school age, who would not come under the regulations. Would the Board assist the ccmnitcce by making a special grant to pay the carrier for these?

Mr Henderson was appointed carrier, as from Ist May. The last clause of the letter was referred back. PHYSICAL CULTUHE, Miss Cameron asked whether the Board would establish physical culture classes for teachers.— Referred to tho Inspector for his report. DUILUINGS. The chairman of the Opuuake committee wrote that the headmaster's residence wi\f infested with worms, and was rotting. It would be false economy to. repair it. Three headmasters had refused to live in it, and one applicant for the headmaster's position had withdrawn his application after seeing the house. The committee suggested moving to a better site and adding a couple of habitablo rooms.—The letter will be forwarded to the Department, i The matter of accepting tenders for the New Plymouth Technical school was referred to the Chairman and Messrs Morton and Maunder, with power to act. On the recommendation of the Reserves Committee, it was decided to transfer the lease of [section 14, block 14, Upper Waitara, containing five acres from C. S. Matthews to William Campbell for the unexpired term.
