OUR SCHOOL CADETS.
MAJOB DEMPSEY'S ANNUAL KEPOET. Mr H. Dempsey, Major commanding the Taranaki Cadet Battalion, lias forwarded to the Education Board the following report on tho work of tho battalion in tho past year. The battalion consists of. Central School No. 1, Central School No. 2, Inglowood, Stratford, West End, and Waitara, with detachments at Ngaire, Okato and Uremii. A detachment has also been formed at Opunake, but, probably owins to its distance from headquarI tors, no application has yet been made [to join the battalion. During tho past year the drill generally was carried out with the same care and thoroughness that characterised it during the provious year, the officers displaying-in-creasing enthusiasm in their work. A oamp of instruction was held at Sentry Hill at tho end of March, and resulted, I believe, in considerable gain to the boys, who carried out the duties entrusted to them with commendable zeal and earnestness. During the seven days the boys were in camp, they were individually practised in the most practical and important work of a soldier, and showed marked aptitude in carrying out the duties required. From what I have seen, I am confident that the cadet system is having a beneficial effect on the discipline, manners, and health in our schools, and that the school life of our boys has been made brighter and more enjoyable by the movement.
