THE RAILWAY DEVIATION.
In connection with the llailway deviation in New Plymouth, which seems to be causing much apprehension in some quarters, it might be advisable to point out that the agitations are somewhat premature. Certainly the Borough Council are entitled to courteous acknowledgment of their communications to the Gederal Manager for Railways on the matter, but why all the noise about the Buller street route when the Department has never announced that it has decided to adont that route ? As a matter of fact the Department has not yot decided which route to follow, that around the cliffs or along Buller streets. The information that is now being obtained from landowners regarding valuation, etc., is for the purpose of enabling the Departmental officers to weigh up the merits of the two alternate routes in the light of the fullest information. Meantime the route as far as the Henui from the main line is the only portion that has been decided upon, and work is now in progress on that section. No doubt the Council will bo required to furnish information regarding valuations and compensation, etc., before the Department decides ou the ultimato route.
