HE BOROUGH BETTING BYLAW.
A good deal ot curiosity exists as to the exact wording of tho comprehensive by-law under which bookmakers have been lined for betting on New Plymouth borough reserves. The by-law deals with any person who frequents or uses any " public place " on behalf of himself or any other person for the purpose of bookmaking, betting, or wagering, or agreoiug to bet, wager, or pay, receive or settlo uuy bot or wager, or, being a betting man or bookmaker, or layer of totalisator or other odds, transacts any business relating to any such calling in any public place. -For the purposes of this sub-section, "public place " includes every street, footpath, courtway, alley, thoroughfare, market, park, square, garden, racecourso, recreation grounds, and placo of public resort which for the time being is open to or used by tho public, whethor on payment of an entrance feo or not, also any railway station, platform or carriage, also auy vehicle plying for hire, and any public hall, theatre, or rcom in which any performance or entertainment open to the public is being held, and also any bar, dive, room, or passage forming part of any premises licensed under any Act relating to the sale of alcoholic liquor, and also any billiard room licensed under th» bylaws.
