COMMUNICATION CUT OFF. CITY ITNDEK MARTIAL LAW. Nkw Yoiik, April 17. A great earthquake lias occurred at Bau Francisco. All the harbour cables arc gone, but the Commercial is trenched for several miles from the beach to the city, The last report, at 12.30 p.m., says that fires were raging in all directions. The water mains have burst, and the authorities were using dynamite to localise the Palace Hotel and Spreciles buildings, which were destroyed. The city is under martial law.

All troops are called out. At present there is no communication.
