CORRESPONDENCE.
NEW PLYMOUTH RAILWAY DEVIATION.
TO TUB EDITOII. Su,—Your remarks in regard to the above deviation show that there has been no unwillingness on the part of the Government to meet the wishes of the district, or to push ou with the works, but I am surprised to Unci that the railway engineers arc not bold enough to take the railway nearer the beach, as might have been done with advantage to all parties. The plans I prepared for the deputation (one of which was taken to Wellington by Sir Joseph Ward) showed that a slight modification of the beach route would be economical and advantageous to the department, including, as it did, a further permanent foreshore reclamation and protective works. I rightly consider that the engineers arc too cautious in the matter, and the beach route would bo cheaper for the department, and belter for New Plymouth and Fitzroy, than the Buller streetEdgecumbe route now determined on; at least, I might havo had that courtesy extended to me, as an engineer, of enquiring for my reasons for publicly preferring the beach route.—l am, etc., FIUNCIS A. TfIEGELLIS, C.E.
