STRATFORD NEWS.
(OWN COHKEBPONDENT.—Sr-ECIIL.) Humour has it that our present Mayor is not going to have a " walkover " in the Mayoral lelection after all. Councillor R. McK. Morison is spoken of as the likely candidate to oppose him. The country to the east of Stratford is claiming tho attention of outside buyers.' Several gentlemen from the Wairarapa district drove into Whangalnomoua last week, with a view to buying land. The Town Hall is having swing doors erected in the entrance. This will be .greatly appreciated by the numerous patrons, especially in the dross circle of tho theatre.
The Stratford Mounted Rifles, 36 strong, under Captain Liardet and Lieutenant Hino, left by the troop train on Thursday evening for the camp at Waverley. Several members of the infantry corps left by the same train for the camp at Wangaehu. The express trains have been crowded with holiday-seekers, both incoming and outgoing. The Department has evidently made up its mind to make farmers eradicate noxious weeds. Last court day a local farmer was fined,'and I hear that prosecutions are likely to follow m other cases.
A very heavy frost was experienced here on Saturday morning.
