NEW PLYMOUTH RAILWAY DEVIATION.
THE PLANS NEARLY COMPLETE. WORK TO BE COMMENCED SHORTLY.
Hon. Colonel Pitt, Acting-Minister for Railways, informed a r.ui.v News representative oil Saturday evening that Mr Ronaync, General Manager lor Railways, has promised that tlie .plaus for tlie New* IMymouth railway deviation will be prepared in a few days, and submitted to him on his return from Auckland. He was unable to give details, but conveyed the impression that the whole route had been decided. It is not yet known locally whether the representations of the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr R. Coek). Hon. T. Kelly, M.L.C'., and Messrs Ji. M. Smith aud W. T. Jennings, M.'sH.H.. have had any effect, but it is quite evident that the department does not intend to further consult the New Plymouth people in the matter of route. If the plans are to take the line along any other route than along the cliffs, it is fair to concede that there must be engineering dillieulties in the way of placing the rails in the position advocated locally. But, as i.yet, all is surmise, except this gratifying assurance from the Minister that j the work will be put in hand almost immediately.
