FOOTBALL.

The annual meeting of the Opunake 1 Club was held on Saturday, about forty members being present. It was decided to enter a seijior and a junior team for the Union competitions. The report stated inter alia: "The senior team was successful in defeating the Hawern seniors in the play-off for the southern division honors and defeated Stratford for the championship. On account of a protest, the Tarauaki Union debarred our club from holding the banner. An appeal against the Union's decision was lodged with tho New Zealand Union, and has yet to be decided. Tho fee for the appeal was generously donated by the old players and admirers of the club, to whom the committee feel very grateful." The season is to be opened on Saturday. About forty members wore present at the annual meeting of tho Waimate Football Club on Saturday. The opening was fixed for Saturday next, and the Munagemet Committee were authorised to arrango for practices at different centres, an offer from a sup. porter to run a tree brake to the different praeticos being accepted with thanks, A committee was set up to arrange a scheme for school contests botween tho schools in the Waimate district, to play for Mr Jury's cup. which was won outright by llu' Juniors last year. The annual mcetiug of the Eltham Football Club was held on Saturday, sixty members being present. It was decided to. open the season with a practice match on Thursday. Thrto teams, Senior, Junior, and Second Junior will be entered for the competitions as last year. The annual moeting of the Taranaki Rugby Union is to be held at Stratford on Friday. The balance-sheet shows that financially the Union is in a very sound position. The report states " that it was not anticipated at the beginning of the season that funds would bo in credit at the end of the year, owing to the fact that the team would be on tour, but thanks to the generous support of the public at tho various [home matches, a balance of £7O 7s l)d is brought forward to bogin the new year with." The Union benefitted to the extent of £282 2s Ud from gatos, of which £llO 18s 3d was taken at the Auckland v. Tarauaki match at New Plymouth. 1
