A HIGHWAYMAN.

As a mall named Bailey was driving a grocer's cart within the vicinity of town on Saturday evening, he was hailed up by a man with a revolver, and his money demanded. Bailey had only two shillings, which lie gave as an al* tcrnativc to his life. The police hare been searching for the highwayman, but so far have found no trace.
TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES' ' DISPUTE. TEB PRESS ASSOCIATION. * Ciibistchubch, April I. The employees of the Tramway Board are dissatisfied with the decisiou Of the Board to adopt the merit and demerit system of enforcing discipline as from April Ist, and to appoint W. G. Bassett, lately of Auckland, as Motor Inspector. Tliey met early this morning to discuss the position and decide on furture action. Mr T. H. Davpy, M.H.R., presided, and there were also present the president of the Trades and Labor Council, and prominent Unionists. Mr Davey and others oxhorted the men not to strike, and it was decided that he should organise a citizens' deputatien to wait on the Board and ask theni to re-consider their decision. The leaders of the deputation were also asked to make enquiries concerning Mr Bassott.
