The Benefit of Trees. Since ISC7 extended experiments made in Norway and Sweden, France, Germany, Austria, and the United States, have tbundantly confirmed tlm old belief that trees help to kill impurities of the air. From shese wo gather that forests are in reality great luborntoru s of Nature, wherein are prepared many good things which tend to man's. happiness and health. By them, as by the Eea, the temperature of the air is so modified that violent storms are less frequent and less destructive, and the soil is kept cool in tropical and subtropical districts. By trees, too, the air is rendered from 3£ to 10 per cent, nioister, and rain is induced in such barren places as the Steppes of Eussia. In ISGB, the pestilential Cauipagna di Homa iras planted with trees, and by 1881 great numbers of people lived there free from fevers and other diseases. The rapid-grow-ing balsamic eucalyptus has purified thousands of acres', and Bournemouth owes its very existence and growth to its resinous pine woods. The TJpas tree is harmless except for its poisonous juice, but some American Sumach trees exhale injurious gag.
