CRIMINAL LIBEL.

PBB. TRESS ASSOCIATION. Auckland, March 28. At the Police Court to-day, Jas. Regan, owner and publisher of a weekly paper culled " Saturday Night," published in Auckland, pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal libel in publishing two articles. 111 February, reflecting on the conduct and administration by Dr. Seattle of the Avondale Mental Hospital, .Auckland. Defendant later published' a complete apology, and withdrew all the charges, and Dr Beattio, on oath, said he was satisfied with the apology, but in the public interest, the prosecution was brought. It appears defendant received a written statement from attendants at the Asylum, who have been discharged. Defendant was committed far sentence to the Supreme Court.
