Chinese apparently find business "allli" in New Plymouth, if the increasing attention the race is devotiuc to the town may be accepted as a criterion. Time was, not so very long ago, when the Chinaman was almost a rarity here; now he is a very considerable quantity, and for the most part in business. Within |tho past month no less than threo separate Chinese signs have appeared oyer now fruit and grocery shops in town. These have evidently got on the nerves of at least one New Zoaland patriot, whose protest yesterday disfigured the windows of two at least of these shops. Traced with a heavy tar brush the inscription ran:—" The Yellow Peril. God bless Lionel Terry."
Tiie Harvest Festival serrviees at St. Mary's Church, New Plymouth, on Sunday, were very successful. F. G. Evans preached a most impressive and instructive sermon in the evening, drawing on the life of Mary Magdolcno for his subject maiter, which he handled with particular ability. According to a most careful analysis made by an expert accountant at the request of Mr W. F. Masscy, M.H.R., Leader of the Opposition, omitting constituencies where contests were brought about by candidates nominated by the Prohibition Party, the voting at the recent elections contains some interesting comparisons, and the number of voters in tliß colony who declined to vote for the Government nominees is very much larger than appeared at the time of the elections. The Government secured 185,141 votes, the Opposition 137,192, the Independents 32,04.7, New Liberals (5072, and the Labor candidates 5513.
