GOVERNMENT VALUATIONS.

PROTEST FROM PUBLIC MEETING. There was an influential gathering of ratepayers at the "meeting hold on Friday night to discuss tho new valuations of property in the borough. Mr M, Frascr presided. There were several speakers, all of whom protosted against the huge, and, as they stated, unwarrantable increase of the valuations. The following resolution was carried without dissent, on tho motion of Messrs Fraser and Goodaere: ''That in the opinion of this meeting the valuations of properties in the town are too high and exceed the real market value, and that the valuation is evidently based upon the false value existing during the land and property boom." A copy of this resolution will bo forwarded to the Premior, and one to tho Valuer-General. Messrs. Frascr, Teed, Parker, Carter, W. Morey, and J. Handy wore elected a committee to obtain signatures to a petition to bo forwarded to tho head of the Valuation Department, to take steps to have objectors' statements p.-operly put, to call another meeting; or take any other steps necessary to have the objections thoroughly organised before the Assessment Court sitting.
