Sin, —As your paper is looked upon as' the sporting paper of Taranaki, a few comments on the above races will not, I trust, be out ot place, Of all the incidents that took place, I do not intend to write, but as some were so autocratic and unfair in this lair, enlightened land of ours, 1 must, as a New Zealandcr, for the sake of fair play, enter n>v objection. The first incident I will mention occurred on the first day. Just as th j Flying Handicap was over, a prominent ollicial sang out in a loud voice to the owner of one of the competing horses, '• Oh, your horse was out for an airing." How pleasant for owners to have this sort- of thing hurled at them in a loud tone ! Suflice it to say, there was an enquiry, and this caliu, courteous ollicial was proved in the wrong. And then the second day's gathering. Can those present ever forget it i The ball was started rolling early by a gentleman being ordered off the course, with a policeman at his back, the reason being that he was betting with the bookmakers. Mind, he was ordered off on the testimony of one ollicial, although the notice in the Club's book says: " Any person found approaching a bookmaker or his agent, with the intention, i>." the orixms or iiu; stkwAUDS, of making a wager, will be ejected from the Club's property." If my memory of history serves me right, there was a law passed in a.i>. 1215 called the "Magna Cliarta," which still holds good to-day. By it a man is innocent until proved guilty. ell, to proceed.
