TRAGEDY IN A POLICE CELL.
FEB FBBSS ASSOCIATION, Hamilton, March 13. A man named James Mills, who was arrested at Ngaruawahia on Saturday, on a charge of the theft of a watch, was found dead in the police cells tlicro on the following morning with his throat cut. Another prisoner, who occupied the same coll, says he knew nothing of the tragedy until he awoke in tho morning and found 1 Mills dead. Tlic inquest was delayed for the attendance of the chief detective. Later. On Saturday an old man named Jas. Mills was locked up in the Ngaruawahia lockup on a charge of theft. A mau named O'Brien, alias Dolan was later put into the same cell, also on a charge of theft. Constable Cavauagh searched both prisoners before locking them up, aud visited the cell at 12.30, when Mills appeared to be asleep. At six o'clock on Sunday morning O'Brien called out, aud Constable Cavauagh went to sec what was the matter. He was told by hiin that the prisoner Mills had cut his throat. An inspection by the constable revealed that this was so. The man's throat was cut right across, and he was quite dead. A razor was lying alongside the body.
