A RACECOURSE SENSATION.

WHOLESALE PTOMAINE POISONING. FIFTY PEItSONS AFFECTED. Will I'IIBSS ASSOCIATION. Til am ks, March 19. A great sensation was created at Paeroa this afternoon, when about half a hundred people, who were in attendance at the Ohinemuri Jockey Club races, were attacked with ptomaine poisoning. Amongst the eatables supplied at luncheon was potted tongue, and it is believed that this was the cause of the attack. Some of the cases were most serious, and it was feared that there would bo loss of life. Some were attacked so seriously that they had to be carried into Paeroa on stretchers. The hotels were, for a tune, full of sick people. There was great excitement as the news spread, and considerable anxiety was felt. Among those attacked were Sergt McKinuon (Waihi), Detectives De Norville and Miller, and Constable Beddek. Messrs. Feilder aud Bush and Wallace (Paeroa) were also ill, but are now in a better condition. Mrs! R. Montgomery aud A. |Montgomcry were in serious condition. Messrs. Royal (Koinata A'alley), Moresby (Waihi), Miss McEntecr (of Thames). Mrs E. Shaw, Messrs. Fielder and Connolly (Karangahake), and a boy named Henderson were also attacked, but are reported to be out of danger. No casualties havo been reported so far.
